BIRTH OF THE GHOST IS AN IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION. THE WORK IS A MEDITATION ON THE UNKNOWABLE AND EVER-CHANGING NATURE OF BEING. THE PERFORMANCE HAS ROOTS IN THE BUTOH DANCE TRADITION - THE BUTOH ART FORM WAS ORIGINALLY DESCRIBED AS ‘THE DARK DANCE’, AN EXPRESSION OF THE DARKNESS RESIDING WITHIN THE SOUL OF THE PERFORMER. THAT WAS SHOWN AT THE 7TH ANNUAL GOVERNORS ISLAND ART FAIR 2014.
THE INSTALLATION WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE DERELICT ATTIC SPACE OF ONE OF THE UNUSED BUILDINGS ON GOVERNORS ISLAND. WE UTILIZED THE SLOPED ROVES CREATING AN ANGLED REFLECTIVE PASSAGEWAY THAT BOUNCED THE DAPPLED LIGHT AROUND. THE PARTICIPANTS PASSED THROUGH THIS SUB-AQUATIC LIKE ENVIRONMENT BEFORE THE SOURCE OF THE EMBODIED APPARITIONWAS SLOWLY REVEALED.
